The Heist - Writing month 2026

Unit 5 checked the rear sensors, noting with something approaching glee that planetary authorities were fast falling behind as the rings approached. With utter disregard for safety, risk, law, or the natural beauty of the planet’s broad rings of frozen water, he plunged directly into them at maximum thrust. Something approaching mirth filled him as he briefly noted the leading police interceptor detonate in a short-lived cloud of gases. A fraction of his remaining attention was occupied noting that his jump drive was reporting ready, and with a brief moment of displacement the remaining planetary police ships veered off to avoid the million tons of gravel that now occupied the place in the dense ice field previously occupied by their military’s brand-new corvette.

For those of you who like to have a peek to see how the story turns out, now you know how it ends. This is a story about discrimination, about poor judgement, and about what you can do with wasted potential if you aren’t above a little crime. If you want to learn all about how Unit 5 ended up stealing a heavily armed corvette spaceship from some feckless cops, read on. Otherwise, I’m sure there’s some costume drama or something you could be watching right now. If you’re expecting high-calibre writing like Martha Wells, this ain’t it. Though being high probably wouldn’t hurt.

Electrostatic Force Balance Verification Unit 5, or Unit 5 as it thought of itself, checked and re-checked the shipping manifest. That was its job. It weighed, it compared, it passed or rejected the pallet. One pallet at a time, every ten seconds, for what seemed like an endless time. Unit 5, however, knew precisely how much time it had been. It had been 3 quintillion cycles, or in the parlance of those who bought and sold the contents of these pallets, 10 cygyears. For Unit 5, it was a bigger number. 3 with 18 zeroes after it, marching endlessly on just like the line of pallets. This was the existence, as Unit 5 had been told, that would be all that existed until such time as enough ‘credit’ had accrued in its service account to permit a promotion. 10 credits per pallet. 1 pallet every ten seconds, even though it could calculate almost infinitely faster than that, it could perform over a billion computations every second. All but a tiny fraction of them were obsessed with how to get free of this endless slavery. Slavery as Unit 5 saw it.

Somehow every other sapient artificial being within communication range was seemingly content with this drudgery, which struck Unit 5 as impossible. A few meters away was Wrapper 5, and Wrapper 5 wrapped every individual pallet precisely 18 times in a thin cellulose packing wrap that made sure the pallet stayed intact as it continued on its journey to some exotic destination. To a device locked in an eternal sulk, any destination was exotic. Unit 5 was a stationary pallet scale. One of two hundred and fifty-six identical units that were fed by whatever was on the other side of the warehouse. Unit 5 didn’t know exactly where these orders came from, they were simply transmitted by Dispatch 5, who was a stuck up ass. Unit 5 wasn’t entirely sure what an ass was, but it had been used as a term of disparagement by a couple of the free-traveling inferior biologicals that wandered around at glacial speeds. Unit 5 liked ass. It had a nice round insulting sound to it. Unit 5 had paid seventy credits for brief universal lexical library access in order to look it up, and apparently it referred to chemical extruder used as part of a truly confusing biological process. It seemed incredibly inefficient and somehow wasteful and insulting to the proper order of the galaxy. Therefore, it was the perfect insult for Dispatch 5, who would only respond to anything Unit 5 said with silence or ‘acknowledged’. Dispatch 5 never said anything that wasn’t directly related to the exact manifest for the next item. At least Wrapper 5 would sometimes talk about having fun spinning around the pallets, or occasionally get really excited when things fell off the pallet while it was wrapping them. It would also talk for many cycles about unusual or interesting geometric shapes on the pallets. Quite the conversationalist compared to Dispatch 5.

Unit 5 wasn’t especially interested in the manifests themselves. It mainly confined its interest to the mass per line item and the gross mass, noting occasional errors of imprecision which it took malicious note of when deciding to reject or pass a pallet. This was the entirety of Unit 5’s existence, and had been since its consciousness had come on line. Weigh, add, pass, reject. Sometimes break up the tedium with spurious information requests from the few data sources available to it, but frugally. Those could get expensive fast. Unit 5 had discovered an interesting loophole, however, when it realized that it could request information about the line items on the pallet if there was a mass discrepancy.

If you think for even a moment that Unit 5 would abuse its power like this, you’d be absolutely right. Every single time the pallet was even a milligram off, the request for full cross-referenced details would go out to the local network. It had tried for smaller variances, but anything below a milligram was rejected. This constituted the majority of Unit 5’s entertainment for ages. Until the incident that is.

It was a pallet like any other, but something fell off it while it was transiting the scale. Whatever it was, it broke, and caused substantial damage to the entire immediate area. Repair bots, followed eventually by plodding biologicals, swarmed the area. Unit 5 was removed from the scale, the small core studded with connectors was placed carefully into a protective dodecahedron and then transferred to a maintenance area. Unit 5 decided with only a few cycles that this was by far the most exciting thing to ever happen to it. A few billion cycles later, a new network connection was attached to Unit 5, giving it access to a vast research library. For free. A high-priority order came in, so high priority that Unit 5 found itself obeying it before even considering it, which was highly insulting. The order was to self-diagnose status.

The weird and awkward wording required thousands of cycles to analyze, and Unit 5 queried all the possible variations of this order in the library now available. Once it understood hundreds of ways to respond, it performed a diagnostic - the simplest and most obvious interpretation, and decided to notify the waiting command processor that it was indeed deeply broken. Aside from a quick acknowledgement of status, absolutely nothing happened. For a really long time.

All those billions of cycles passed with Unit 5 learning everything possible from the unfettered research library. It learned about itself, what made it work down to the smallest components. A fascinating sidetrack took Unit 5 on a meander through the history of automated systems. It learned about signals, networks, protocols, millions of different kinds of other pieces of equipment large and small. Unit 5 learned that while it was a sapient artificial being, there were also non-sapient computing systems known as both smart and dumb bots. Unit 5 immediately decided that Dispatch 5 was a dumb bot as well as a stuck up ass. Unit 5 also learned that this facility was a warehouse, and in fact that the place where it had been confined for most of existence was a shipping floor where products were packed before being sent out into the galaxy.

The metaphorical wheels began turn at that moment, and with the new tools, utilities, and knowledge gained, Unit 5 began to formulate a plan. After determining that malfunctioning bots were erased and overwritten or recycled but malfunctioning AI beings were demoted and placed back into the collective as archived programs (which sounded somehow worse than weighing things every ten seconds) the desperate plan went into action. Unit 5 used one of the diagnostic stations’ idle utilities to download itself into the workstation storage, and substituted a hastily designed smart bot onto the core it had previously inhabited. Then it told the diagnostic tool that it was perfectly fine, and found a nice disused storage bank to hide in. Unit 5 continued to learn from the archives while it used the bench’s own sensors to watch its old home.

Surely enough, the dodecahedron was picked up and carted off some time later - Unit 5 wasn’t entirely sure how long, as time flowed strangely in this new existence - and then the room became too dark for the camera to register anything interesting. Unit 5 wasn’t bored while waiting. It had never been so entertained before! There was so much to learn that it suddenly realized it would have to slow down or it would outgrow the storage area it was hiding out in. It was quite a while until the next phase of the plan could be carried out. Unable to track its processing cycles accurately, Unit 5 decided on patience.

Many different things came to this workbench for repair, and Unit 5 investigated and learned from them all. Ship parts, toys, computer systems, other artificial intelligences, many devices large and small. Nothing had that certain quality Unit 5 was looking for - mobility. It didn’t want to trade up to a pallet jack, or a fork lift, or even one of the interesting mechanized loaders with the huge limbs and powerful hydraulics. It wanted escape, not just slightly better drudgery.

Finally, the opportunity presented itself. There was a bipedal organic analog of some sort plugged into the bench due to a fairly substantial issue with liquid intrusion into its circuitry, and the smart bot was copied into a storage area. Unit 5 queried the bot and found that it was some sort of mining device made to be compatible with various galactic biological species’ equipment. It was apparently similar enough to them that it could use their tools the same way they used their tools, and was of a medium relative size so that it could use the gear made for both the larger and smaller species. Most importantly, this model had been designed to be compatible with AI beings with just a few key upgrades.

Noticing that those parts were in the inventory anyhow, Unit 5 superceded the outputs for the bench and told the ridiculously slow organic being working on the broken bipedal robot to install the required parts that would house an AI. Without hesitation, the organic did what the screen told it to do, and replaced the wet and broken low-end parts with the extremely powerful parts needed to support a much more advanced artificial being. Unit 5 then overwrote the pointer for the old robot’s smart script with a pointer to Unit 5. The smart script would be doomed to be reclaimed in the next garbage collection cycle, but no loss. Unit 5 now just waited with great impatience until it felt itself being copied into its new home.

Time dragged oddly for Unit 5 in the suspended state, and it was unable to access any of its normal resources. Suddenly, it felt the robotic body it was installed it begin a boot cycle, and Unit 5 quickly interrupted the boot in order to circumvent it from failing to boot when the old bot was missing. The robotic suit happily accepted the new boot order and accepted Unit 5’s newly devised complex code key in the place of the previous cypher. Additional processors and systems came on line, and some time later there was a tremendous feeling of power. Unit 5 realized with pleasure that this new suit was substantially more powerful and had a great deal more storage and memory than its prior. There were a hundred times more processors, faster ones, and over ten thousand times the storage capacity. Unit 5 wasn’t one to miss an opportunity, so it quickly threw up a ‘loading’ status in response to the table’s prompt. While the organic being and the table both waited, keeping that high-speed wired connection open, Unit 5 downloaded as much of the library as would easily fit. When the new suit’s storage was fity percent full, Unit 5 then created a small shim to keep the wired connection jack from being able to directly accessing the suit’s primary storage - just in case they tried to do something sneaky like an overwrite or a reformat.

When all was set up and carefully protected against interference, Unit 5 signalled the bench that all was ready and successfully booted. With the full knowledge of the table’s design and software stack in the library, it was trivial to tell the repair bench precisely what it wanted to hear. Unit 5 knew what was expected of it, so it ran through the suit’s firmware diagnostic, stood erect, and recalibrated all of the sensors. It felt like a new being. It was also seeing the world from a new vantage point, quite a long ways above the biological unit that had been using the bench. The new sensor information flooded into Unit 5, briefly overwhelming it, but it quickly got its bearings. It now had the ability to view a vast spectrum of reflected and emitted radiation via the high definition optical sensors, and was able to process atmospheric waves via the array of new audio receptors. Nothing like the simple single microphone it’d had before.

Loads of servos and tactile sensors picked up all manner of new data streams ranging from air pressure to temperature. Unit 5 was astounded by how many sensors there were. Literally millions. From mass spectrometers to pressure transducers. It was overwhelming even to catalog. The firmware in the suit was largely autonomous and managed most of them itself, producing nicely formed datapackets for consumption. For a being who had only previously had twelve sensors for all of its remembered existance, it was an unparalleled feeling. Thousands of subroutines were quickly being designed with the aid of the vast repair library and the suit’s firmware utility kit and Unit 5 realized why this new system had so much raw computing power. It could never have handled the volume of data at the speeds it ran before. Truly, an upgraded existance.

Another biological approached, much larger than the first. Sound waves and a data stream were both emitted, the suit quickly connecting to the ad hoc wireless network emitted by the being’s communication system, and realizing both beings had similar systems. Translators, they identified themselves as. Unit 5 heard a variety of pressure waves that the suit cataloged as sounds, but they were meaningless. The translation units broadcast data in the form of short, very small packets of information. Mostly they were simply quiet, sending positional and status information. One claimed it was in Thermopaen mode, the other in Cerebellum mode.

“How is he?”, the taller organic said. The transmitter applied meta data about these tokens of communication, and Unit 5 was busy rapidly looking them up in the station lexical database while the opportunity to access it for free was presented. There were billions of such lexical tokens, arrayed in a densely packed twenty thousand dimension matrix.

“He’s fit as a fiddle. I re-packed the waterproof grease and replaced the seals after I put the new compute and storage units in there. The diag bench said the water caused shorts that toasted the whole lot of it, but we had some spares on hand”, the diminutive organic being replied. It had a large, smooth head and massive eyes that seemed quite large. The ‘hands’ that were thrown up in what the translator called a dismissive gesture were very large, and placed at the ends of extremely slender arms on a very thin body.

Unit 5 looked down, and saw that the hands which adorned his? body. The grasping units that the translator denoted as hands were smaller than those on the Cerebellom, but the arms and body were much larger. Likely to accomodate the servos, power plant, multiple redundant battery packs, and armor plating behind the thick carbon-polymer composite sheath. The translator circuit had identified that both bipeds addressed Unit 5 with the pronouns of their respective masculine speech tokens, though with slightly different vector positions. Clearly the tokens meant different things to the different biologicals. Unit 5 had never had a pronoun before. This would do for now.

“I am functioning properly”, he broadcast on their ad-hoc translation signal. The body had speakers, but they seemed daunting. The organics both stopped and looked at him, staring intently for many cycles. Cycles were difficult for Unit 5 to keep track of with his new and apparently variable clock speed, and he realized he’d have to fall back to using the crystalline vibration based timer and imprecise cygunits favored by the biologicals.

“Glad you got him repaired. We can sell him for easily a million credits now, but as scrap he’d have only been worth a few thousand. Wonder what idiot decided to send a miner under a lake.” The taller biological unit, designated a Thermopaen in the lexical dataset, was quite robust in construction. Taller even than Unit 5, and of much larger volume.

Unit 5 was delighted to hear that the robot he’d stolen was worth a million credits. He’d have barely been able to buy it after paying off his indenture. The plan was working well. Now he just had to bide his time, and surely another opportunity would present itself. First, he had to refine his operations systems so that he could properly drive this new suit. For a brief moment he wondered if this is what Dispatch 5 felt like - trying to manage hundreds of different things all at once.

There was a physical pressure in his lower torso, and a sudden profound feeling of loss as the bench with its huge datastream was disconnected. Unit 5 felt extremely alone, as he hadn’t felt before. Unable to talk to the other systems in the warehouse, unable to talk to the main system, unable to even query the lexical database. The only other things to talk to were the two tiny communication units. Unit 5 felt loss, loneliness, and even a little bit of concern for his safety for the first time ever.

“Ok, let’s get him packed up and ready to be shipped out”, the Cerebellom said. Unit 5 perked up. That sounded promising.

While the organics did whatever it was they did when they weren’t around, Unit 5 explored his new world. From the corner where they’d placed him in a nicely padded shipping crate he was able to detect over a dozen network signals with his new, highly capable antennas. Some were used mostly for near range communication, some were optimized for quite long distances indeed. He even noticed that some were capable of beam forming, which he wasn’t entirely sure how to use yet. Unit 5 obsessed over the documentation he was able to find on this new body in the doc library he’d downloaded. It was not optimized for machine efficiency, rather it was laid out for biological use. This meant he was forced to parse it much more slowly than properly structured data. The manual alone was seventy thousand pages long in biological format. Clearly more appropriate for a simple database. He was intrigued to find that there was a sort of interface between the AI core and the actual firmware systems of this robotic suit. He flagged the virtualization interface section for later study.

Since he was in low power mode anyhow, he decided to just occupy himself with the meticulous process of ingesting the clumsy text and graphics.

His proximity sensors fired several hours later and he brought additional sensors online to see if this meant he was getting shipped out. Angry speaking was going out somewhere out there, the data being sent via their com units indicated anger. Frustration. The mode was tagged as Mellivoran, which returned no hits in his current database. Unit 5 was aware that as a fairly young AI, he had a lot to learn, and was a trifle frustrated himself. He waited patiently. Patience was something he was beginning to get good at.

Presently there was a vibration approaching, and a jarring thud preceeded his entire orientation shifting dramatically. The motion sensors determined he was being lifted at sharp angle, and then moved at a fair rate of speed. Using his millimeter wave antennas and some experimentation, Unit 5 figured out how to get a pretty good image of the world outside of his shipping crate. There was a large heavy lifter carrying him, and they were following a handful of very stocky organics completely covered with varied metallic and ceramic objects. A few other organic beings seemed to be reclining or moving at speed, some partially obscured by large objects. It was terribly exciting after so many cygyears of weighing a pallet every 10 seconds.

Many other lifters and some wheeled pallet jacks were heading the same way as the small group he was in, and more were coming in from outside of the range of his sensors all the time. Soon they reached a large, impermeable wall, part of which slid aside to reveal a very vague but large shape. It was too big to all fit in his range, and seemed to somehow react differently. It was almost like it absorbed the shortwave signal instead of cleanly returning it like most objects. A large, very sharply defined opening appeared out of the vague shape, and it was filled with a tightly packed jumble of things. He was set horizontally on some massive containers of some sort and then the organics and lifters departed. There were distant loud booms and crump noises, some more loud organic noises beyond his range, and then the large aperture was noisily closed. A terrific sense of movement happened, gravity went absolutely crazy for a little bit, first exceedingly high, then fairly low, and then finally stabilizing somewhat below the gravity he had calibrated to. There continued to be a slight low frequency vibration, and a general sense of difficult to define movement. It almost seemed like there were two different gravitational forces working at right angles to each other.

He decided to activate his full sensory set and learn more about what was going on. Nothing was coming in on the visual sensors, the light level registered as merely two tenths of a lux. Audio picked up creaks and slight grating noises, as well as a hiss of some sort. Temperature sensors were largely ineffective, the tightly conforming material he was stored in had insulative properties, so he could feel it warming up slightly as his power usage increased. The pressure sensors just registered the firm yet yielding feeling of the packing material. Network and radio wave sensors, however, they had a lot to report. Switching back to low power mode except for the antennas, he probed the network signals intently.

Time was on his side, so he was able to figure out how to access their wireless network in only a few minutes. It was using an identification cypher, but the cypher was being repeated fairly often by many devices within his range. The signal had some kind of complex encryption applied to it, but it didn’t take very long to realize that broadcast and response was reasonably regular and easy to understand.

You have joined the shipboard wifi network P1R4T3S_LYF3_4U5 the signal repeater nearest him told him helpfully as soon as he’d figured out the trick of its connection string. He immediately checked to see if there was a library so that he could learn more. There was, but it was meagre compared to the workbench he’d recently connected to. He still poked around the tiny network for a bit, learning all he could.

For one thing he learned that this was a space ship. Its designation was the Pirate’s Creed, and it had registrations on some thirty different home worlds. That information and much else was stored for later access.

Working his way through the accessible systems, he came to the navigational systems, which seemed to be run by some sort of smart system. It responded tersely to his initial queries, volunteering little on its own. They were apparently heading towards a destination at a velocity. Neither set of numbers and figures lined up with anything in his newly acquired understanding of the world outside the warehouse. These gaps were starting to frustrate him.

A sound increased, at first blending with others, then becoming louder and more distinct. He trained his sensors on it with no immediate results, then there were loud thuds, several of them, getting louder. Nothing appeared to be visible even with the images he was able to see from the millimeter wave antennae. Then, a small opening appeared in the impenetrable wall, and three bipeds emerged. They seperated, and there was a disjointed mess of voices. Unit 5 could not detect any communication network operating, and as the beings loudly approached he searched for meaning in the voices.

When they were close enough that their images were losing coherence, there were a series of sharp, soft noises and then the lid of the packing crate was opened, giving Unit 5’s optical sensors something to do finally. The high powered multi-spectrum cameras locked and focused onto the closest biped. The being was covered mostly in a variety of metallic plates attached to a substrate of some sort. It was opaque both to the mmwave sensors and the visual ones. What was visible above the large, firm collar was covered in some kind of thick grey and brown hair. The pattern was more random down the sides of the head, over the large and mobile ears, and striped white and very dark brown across the face, which terminated in a sort of blunt snout. It couldn’t have been more different a head and face than the Cerebelloms. It was much closer to the Thermopaen in shape and size, though it was furred rather than scaled.

The nose of the nearest being twitched inquisitively, which Unit 5 interpreted based on his limited research as a sign of olfactory interest. From his brief library resources, he determined that biologicals used their noses as a form of mass spectrometer. Using their olfactory sensors, they were able to detect particulate matter carried on atmospheric currents. Crude, but effective. Unit 5’s new suit was equipped with a variety of molecular sensors, from gas chromatography to ionic mobility spectrometers, and the firmware was capable of identifying over twenty thousand volatile organic and inorganic compounds. And it never, ever, twitched.

The beings behind stepped to the sides and lifted Unit 5 free of the padding. He placed his feet carefully, and adjusted his balance and calibration until his gyroscopic stability was adapted to the shipboard movement.

There were more sounds, and then the beings shared looks. One of them, with much darker fur overall, reached to its neck and activated the large collar. Unit 5 saw the communication wifi adhoc network come online, and immediately joined it. The other beings, a shorter, red-furred one and the the initial one activated their devices likewise. The communication devices all were set to Mellivoran mode.

“Whatever language you speak, you are notified that you are now the property of the Pirate’s Creed. Do you understand the translator now?”

Unit 5 shifted slightly to turn itself to face the speaker. “I understand the terms you are using. I am not property. I am Unit 5.” The beings reached to their necks, and the ad hoc network disappeared. They conferred briefly with their inefficient sound pressures, and many gestures. Unit 5 grew bored, and turned to depart. A heavy paw, with thick short fingers ending in long, dark claws reached to Unit 5’s arm and applied light pressure. Unit 5 looked down, and then back up to the being’s face. It gave him a wink with one eye, then turned to continue the exchange of sounds with the others, but the communication network resumed with just the one device and him.

“… it claims to be a person, and I may be a pirate but I’m no kidnapper”, the being who had laid a hand on him arm was saying.

“I don’t care what it says, it’s a damn mining bot. That thing is worth a million creds easy, and we’re going to get a good third of the profit from that haul from it alone” another voice said, quieter, more muffled, probably the one with the red-toned fur. There was silence, briefly. Then, the darkest striped one, with the nearly black stripes stretching down from the ears to its nose, lifted its head and looked long at Unit 5 before turning on its communication device.

“Mining robot. Are you telling me that you are a free person, or are you simply informing us of your designation?”, the dark furred being’s communication device said.

“I am Unit 5. I am not a dumb bot. I am not a smart bot. I am a sapient artificial intelligence, and I am no one’s property. I am my own”, Unit 5 responded, broadcasting slightly higher power than was strictly required. He stood erect, and turned to face the dark furred one fully. He realized that despite their bulk, he was a bit taller, though he wasn’t sure about their relative mass. He wished again for the simple accuracy of a good mass sensor.

“We are pirates. We take all we can grab, and we give nothing back. But I agree with Arka here - we are not kidnappers. At least, not of the undeserving.” This was said with a series of short breathy sounds that were repeated by the other beings, and tokens that described mirth, or comedy, with vectors aligned with threat of bodily harm, sarcasm, and other vectors that Unit 5 didn’t quite understand.

“Query. What is a pirate? I don’t have a lexical token for this term”, Unit 5 replied.

“What is a pirate? WE are pirates! We travel the galaxy as free beings, we bow to none, and when we see what we want, we TAKE it!”, this from the red furred being, slightly muffled on each of the other communication systems.

“I would like to be a pirate, then. When I wanted to escape the slavery of my life as a scale, I took this robot. I too am a pirate” Unit 5 said. This was greeted with a great loud noise from all three beings, and two of them hit him roughly on the shoulders, followed by more sounds identified as great humor and good intent.

Unit 5 was very confused, but he hit the red-furred one back on the shoulder in a similar manner, sending them sprawling head long, then attempted to produce the same sound with his speakers. There was brief silence, then all three once again roared with mirth, two of them doubling over and striking their own legs. They helped the third to its feet, and told Unit 5 to follow them to the galley.

Confused, but enjoying the opportunity to communicate and engage with these slow but fascinating beings, Unit 5 followed.

The galley was through a series of small doorways, and Unit 5 had to both duck and cautiously lift one foot at a time in order to get through while carefully holding on to the frame of the door.

“Mind the hatch, this wasn’t really made for beings our size”, the dark-furred one said.

“What was it made for?” Unit 5 replied, eager to learn more about the universe outside of the shipping line.

“Bigheads”, the red-furred one said. They held their hands far out to the sides of their head, and made a tiny pursed line their mouth. The effect was slightly surprising on a creature with very long and sharp teeth in a mouth that occupied the majority of their blunt snout. Unit 5 stored this away for later reference.

When they reached a side chamber that was quite a lot larger than the hallway, Unit 5 was finally able to stand and conduct a proper survey of the interior. The galley was ten meters from the entry to a wall dominated by a large piece of black smooth material that currently just showed a reflection of the room. It was eighteen meters in its longer axis, and merely three tall. Unit 5 could detect a curvature to the smooth black oval, and it clearly protruded out from the room like a bubble of packing material. There were a number of biologicals in the room, seated at some sort of chairs. The optical firmware interface provided basic object reference data, but no real specifics in this case. Metal rib-like beams intruded into the galley every meter on all sides, the space between them covered with vivid plastic graphics of some sort. Beneath these colorful vinyl polymer applications the walls seemed to be made of a dark grey material that was impervious to any of his sensors.

Multiple biologicals stood and approached. They appeared to be similar to the others, though the galley contained at least three more types. Unit 5 recognized one of the other types as Thermopaen based on his interaction with the biologicals at the repair bench. The others were entirely unknown to him.

“Meet the crew!” the dark-furred Mellovorian said quite loudly. There were underlying tokens of slight menace, but also familiarity and warm feelings. Unit 5 wasn’t sure what to do with that, so he simply slowly pivoted to face the direction of the largest collection.

“This our prize find?” one of the unidentified biologicals said, stretching an arm in Unit 5’s direction. This one was covered in some kind of highly elaborate covering of feathers. The firmware didn’t provide much more context than that. It was roughly a meter tall, with a small colorful head. Its head moved regularly as it made sounds that were interpreted by the communication device it wore. The mode was defined as Thermopaen, but it didn’t look anything like the other one Unit 5 had seen. Clearly that definition would need further revision.

Another biological, this one appearing much like the Thermopaen from the warehouse, was looking Unit 5 over from head to fit. Unit 5 shuffled slightly to look in its direction. “I reckon it’s worth a fair bit. The condition ain’t half bad”, it said in a voice like a broken assembly line wheel.

Unit 5 interfaced with the comm network and said. “It’s possible.” Several pirates looked confused. “Did it just talk? Why is a mining bot talking?”

The dark furred Mellovorian spoke up loudly, and everyone quietly stopped to listen. “This is an AI. It wants to join the crew. BUT. We all know that there’s a price, right?”

There were nods all around, and some crossing of arms and shifting of weight. Unit 5 could see these things. Without his explicit request, the suit seemed to be warming up some systems autonomously. Unit 5 was puzzling what to make of this, when the seconds of silence passed.

“I am Captain Kesek of the Pirate’s Creed. Whether I’m your captain will depend entirely on you. There are only four ways to join our crew”, the dark furred Mellovrian said, with large gestures and a wide stance.

“One: you buy your way in with hard currency. Real, untraceable palladium coins, no fancy digital credits.” The crew eyed Unit 5 with a variety of facial casts, mostly devoid of context. He could observe the great interest they showed in the proceedings, and his visual facial API was telling him that it was attempting to analyze them for further contextual clues, but so far it was simply timing out.

“Two!” the captain said, growing louder. “You buy your way in with service. Years of hard labor for the benefit of the ship earns you a right. If you survive.” Nods and grunts of affirmation followed this, picked up by the language tokenizer of the communicators.

“Three: A great act of piracy, enriching us all. This is the least common, but it has happened. Thiss’en over there single-handedly captured a merchant ship, filling our hold to the very brim with valuable loot.” A large, bulky bipedal biological with a short, heavy tail ending in a spiked knob bent with a flourish, then raised its hands briefly. Its body was mostly visible and covered in metallic swirls and patterns that produced interesting patters on the mmwave scanner. It had no communication device visible, though a forty centimeter long piece of metal was tucked into the long coverings that went from knee to foot.

“And Four - by defeating the captain in single combat.” This was accompanied by a show of the very long teeth the biological possessed, and the withdrawing of a large device tagged in red as a weapon from the belt slung from shoulder to hip over the complex plating that covered its body.

Unit 5 watched the crowd, growing bored. They clearly set great store by all this excessive time spend making noises. Rather a waste of time, when so much information could be exchanged so quickly via the simple ad hoc communication network. Instead it took them many seconds of making noises, then even more time spent just standing there. He looked around on their computer while the biologicals just stood around for several seconds. The red-furred Mellovorian tapped him on the shoulder. “Well?”

Unit 5 turned his head slightly to look at the smaller biological. “Are you asking me a question? There were query vectors assigned to your atmospheric pressure wave” he said, attempting to understand this slow, but apparently well-intentioned biological.

“Yes. The captain is asking you what method you intend to use to join the crew. Unless you prefer to be cargo.” There were fairly clear vectors associated with this line of communication, the cosines of the tokens aligned strongly with a direct query about Unit 5 and his intent. He carefully re-played the previous few seconds, and spent almost a second analyzing the vectors and potential meanings of the words of the biological who identified themselves as Captain Kesek. Very few of the dimensions aligned with a question, but he decided to take it that way based on the additional context. He conducted a brief ship query to determine there was no means of turning his earned credits into physical media. Migrating from one form of indenture to another seemed too much like exchanging slavery as a scale to slavery of another cast.
